Octavio
Quintanilha Diaz-Berrio was
born on January 13th, 1943 at Oporto, Portugal.
He
is the eldest son
of Octavio
Diaz-Berrio Vivas
and Maria Cecilia Carvalho Quintanilha, (sister of Alexandre
Tiedtke Quintanilha),
whom father was the biologist
Aurelio Pereira da Silva Quintanilha. With his grandfather and his friend
Vitorino Nemesio (they were both from Terceira, Azores) learned the pleasure of
long talks.
Gives
up Painting and Architecture to pursue the Light.
His
first steps in photography happened with the age of 10 when he trades a stamp
collection by his first camera. Became professional in 1968 by the hand of Mario
Neves through the Cinema, where he learned to “Write with the Light” with
some well-known Directors of Photography such as Elso Roque, Acacio de Almeida
and Roby Muller (actually in Hollywood). together with Directors as
Sinde
Filipe ("O Piano"), António Macedo ("Nojo aos Cães",
"A Promessa", "O Rico, o Camelo e o Reino ou O Princípio da
Sabedoria"), Manoel de Oliveira ("Benilde ou a Virgem Mãe") e Peter
Lilienthal ("Reyna la Tranquilidad").
His
hunger of aesthetic-technique sense of purism turns him to Still Photography
where he develops his skills on the fields of Fashion, Advertising, Industry and
Editorial.
Was
teacher of "Photography" and "Theory of Photography" in the
School of Visual Arts Antonio Arroyo and IADE - Institute of Art and Design, as
so.
Is
member of Portuguese Authors Society (S.P.A.); the Master Photographers Ass.,
United Kingdom, gave him the highest associate ship - "A.M.P.A."
in 1979.
Selected
by ADIP - Art Director’s Index to Photographers, Switzerland, to
international exhibitions (1984) sponsored by Japanese Kodak and Dentsu the
Advertising Agency, at Tokyo and Osaka, where he wins the first and
second rewards.
Had
probations with F. C. Gundlach (PPS studios, Hamburg, Germany), and Acacio de
Almeida (Centro Galego de Artes de Imaxe, Spain) and Sinar, Switzerland - Fashion Photography, The Light in
the Cinema and Large Format Photography, as so.
With
his images helps to sell ice creams, whisky and shirts… but still remain
astonished with what light can do, when well used, in single silver grains.
Uses
NIKON, HASSELBLAD and SINAR and naturally
computer and associated image software (Photoshop and Corel Draw).
